The Special Moms Network started with two very Special Moms … and an idea. Dana DeRuvo Hanner and Susan Kleiman — both moms of special needs teens at the Center for Discovery in Harris, New York — got to know each other while spending time with their sons at the Center … and also got to talking about the lack of a centralized resource for moms of special needs children in Westchester. Their idea? To provide special needs parents with a forum that would enable them to not only have easy access to a listing of local resources for their children, but to give them a tool to connect with other special needs parents facing similar issues. The reaction when they launched their first Facebook group – Special Needs Moms of Westchester – in 2012? Overwhelming. Moms of special needs children throughout Westchester eagerly flocked to the “group” – thrilled for this opportunity to have 24/7 access to the best, and most trusted, resource of all: other moms going through exactly what they were going through.
From questions about medications, to doctor referrals, to recommendations for the best local services, places and programs for their special needs children, Special Moms of Westchester filled a huge gap in the special needs community – in its first year, the group grew to more than 650 members. And before long, other moms throughout the region wanted to be part of the information-sharing and support system our Special Moms group. In 2014, Special Moms of Westchester expanded into the Special Moms Network … providing moms of special needs children throughout the country, and around the world, with this valuable centralized resource of information, advice — and support.
In creating and launching the Special Moms Network, we uncovered a huge need in the special needs community … and have filled these pages with information that we, as special needs moms, know can help. Together, our network of Special Moms can do some amazing things … and we’re glad that you’re now part of our story, too.
