Dear Mom and Dad,
I am writing to introduce myself. I am one of the dozens of people that will come in and out of your life over the years that you are expected to invest time, money, and trust in. You have probably had many people before me. Some have worked out and some probably have not. You saw amazing progress with some of us while with others you were disappointed. I would imagine you have spent many sleepless nights combing the internet for the newest therapies and who the pioneer in the field is. Maybe you got my name from friends who’s lives improved because of me. My success stories are a huge source of pride for me.
I would like you to know that though I haven’t lived it, I understand what you have been through. It must be very overwhelming to be responsible for so much. I can only imagine how much you celebrate when you find someone or something that works. I celebrate equally when I am a part of the success machine. The disappointment when something doesn’t work is palpable. I’d like you to know how upsetting it is for me to know I have failed your expectations. I chose this field because it brings out the best in me so to see it fail you is very personal.
I have one request to help make our relationship successful. Please don’t judge me based on my predecessors. It’s so difficult to be the second act to someone who brought out your child’s best self. It’s even more difficult when you have been let down repeatedly and assume I’m just going to continue the pattern of disappointment. I can tell pretty quickly from your tone what you are expecting out of me. I know you it’s hard working with someone new. I know you have had to get used to a lot of people and say a lot of good byes. Let’s just agree to give each other a chance and see how it goes. Maybe we’ll even have a little fun.
