If you have a child who will not be able to get a driver’s license you need to take them to DMV when they turn 16 to get a New York State non-driver’s license. It is critical that a child acquire this as official photo ID’s are required to access medical treatment, board planes and enter some public and private buildings.
- Go to www.nydmv.gov website and download the forms.
- Go to DMV with the proper identification and the 16 year old child and get the photo taken and ID issued.
This can also be done for children turning 16 who just want to hold off a few years before applying for a driver’s license. Please do this without delay at age 16 so when you need it you have it ! The staff at DMV are very good and encouraging with the special needs kids meeting this rite of passage at age 16.
