When I decided to write about my experiences growing up with a communication disorder, I couldn’t have imagined that it would resonate with so many. Thank you to those of you who took the time to read and respond to my story. It means so much to me, and I really could never imagine my life taking the turns it has.
From struggling to communicate to a career where communication is at the heart of what I do as a field producer, this project brings me full circle. Merging my professional and personal lives, the little kid forever in me is amazed.
Now, I would like to enlist your help! 40 million Americans are diagnosed with a communication disorder – 1 in 12 are school-age children. Late Talkers, Silent Voices is a media project designed to foster acceptance, share personal stories and provide resources to individuals and families impacted by communication disorders. We aim to level the playing field for all.
We’ve shot our first documentary, telling the story of 5 individuals, ages 3-19, whose lives are impacted by autism, apraxia, and stuttering. It is the first of many projects to come.
Our children say so much with their eyes, hands, tears, laughter and hugs. Let’s work together to help them be understood and heard. To spread our message of acceptance through our initiative support our social media Thunderclap campaign. Visit https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/40279-late-talker-silent-voices and press support. Donations can be made towards the project here https://www.gofundme.com/LateTalkersFilm
Many thanks again to the Special Moms Network. I’ve gained so much from this group as a parent on this journey.
