Annual Event on Fire Island Brings Together More than 50 Special Moms and Special Professionals From Across the Region
One of the biggest benefits of being part of the Special Moms Network is the opportunity to connect with other moms of special needs children, teens and young adults – who not only understand the issues faced by parents of special needs children, but who are a tremendous source of insight, and inspiration, on so many levels. When we first started the Network, we were amazed as to how many moms made connections online through our initial Facebook group – with the number of “special mom connections” growing by the day and year … and moms eager for opportunities to gather with each other to connect in person, as well.
Each summer, in addition to our Special Moms Socials held throughout the year, we offer the opportunity for our “Special Moms” to join together for a fun-filled day on Fire Island, at the home of Special Moms Network co-founder Dana DeRuvo Hanner. At Dana’s home in Kismet, special moms are able to often meet each other for the first time, learn from other special moms, hear the latest information from some top professionals in the special needs community – and simply have a day filled with fun, food … and new friendships.
This year’s “Special Moms Network Day” on Fire Island was held on June 28th, where more than 50 special moms and special professionals enjoyed a fabulous day together. To encourage special moms from throughout the region to attend, the Fire Island Ferries generously provided free ferry tickets and parking for all special moms – and moms unboarding the ferry in Kismet were met at the dock by Dana and Susan for the short walk to Dana’s home. Adding to the excitement of the day, television personality Donna Drake, host of “Living it Up”, a lifestyle television show broadcast on CBS-TV, joined us for the event to capture the day for her show – interviewing a number of our special moms to share with her viewers just how important the Network is in helping moms with special needs children/teens/young adults.
In addition to enjoying a day on Fire Island together, some great food (and wine) and the opportunity to relax and get to know other special moms, the day included some fabulous presentations. Yvonne Dagger from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) treated moms and kids to witness her famous “dog artist” Dagger (aka DogVinci) – who has been featured on the TODAY Show, Inside Edition, the Rachael Ray Show, Time magazine and other media outlets — paint an original portrait. The day also featured presentations by special mom Peggy Nenos, owner of SOS Natural Products and DaQueen Monroe, founder and CEO of The Autism Project, FLOS (For the Love of Shaquan) – a Yonkers based not-for-profit organization with goals of serving pre-teens, teens and young adults with Autism.
It was a great day for all – with moms looking forward to the next opportunity to all get together at our various Special Moms Network Socials throughout the year! Take a look at some of the great photos from this year’s Special Moms Network Day on Fire Island – and we look forward to having you all join us in Kismet at next summer’s event!
