Hi I’m the mom of a terrific six year old with ASD. In my previous life I was a special ed teacher, which sometimes makes it harder and other times easier.
You want him to SURF??
Three summers ago another ASD mom told me how much her son loved a surfing program that took place in Long Beach, since my niece and nephew were the same age as Scott, and surfed I thought maybe next year we’d try.
I stalked surfersway.org waiting for the day they would release the two scheduled days for the summer of 2014. Once they were released we were booked. I was really excited about it until the night before, then the realization of what I was about to do hit. My non- swimming, non -verbal four year old would go in the ocean, with a stranger and stand on a SURFBOARD. I’ll admit it I wanted to cancel. Fortunately my parents were coming with us and they insisted we try.
Once we arrived I was amazed how well run everything was. Scott was registered and put in a life jacket and within a few minutes taken to the ocean. At first he was a little afraid, but they knew how to deal with him and after about ten minutes he was ready to hang10. He rode the board successfully a few times and was soon laughing up a storm.
It is now an annual tradition and we are already signed up for 2016.
