You do it all. OT, PT, ST, SI, Family Training, Developmental Pediatrician. You write social stories and want to publish each one, thinking “If I can only help one other Mom through this situation…”
And then, there it is…. It takes you an entire day to realize what is completely about to ruin the entire vacation- THE GREEN SHOVEL.
So, we are at the shore, Life is Good!
The kids seem to be having fun but our umbrella blows away. At that moment, so did our vacation-almost. I decided to buy a shovel so that we could secure our umbrella properly. And so we did. And so the entire day went to complete “BLEEP”.
That shovel was the reason my son would not go in the ocean, would not let his brother out of his sight, would not just let it go and HAVE FUN. He needed that shovel. He needed to know nobody else would have it.
One may say “OK so you figured it out and gave him the shovel, move on!” But, the damage is done. You and your husband are fighting. Your children are fighting. No matter what you do your son won’t believe that the shovel is his and is here to stay. Because you know what? You have a 3 year-old that now wants the shovel. You are pulled in 2 directions – “Do NOT give into this, Do NOT feed into this!” Family training has taught you better than this.
And then there is a desperate Mama, trying so hard to have a “family” vacation. But what is a Family? It is that which we know and love and need and nurture. It is that reason why I purchased the additional $3.99 “BLEEPing” green shovel.
Why? Because my kid with OCD could not get past it. My 3 year-old could not be asked to let him have it. And I Could.Not.Take.It.Anymore!
So, here sits the green shovel. Not the green-eyed monster of envy for the families that have the perfect vacation.
It sits in my yard reminding me of the everyday families who decide when to give in, when to let go and when to just be……
I am wishing all of you the BEST last week of summer. Be a mommy, be a warrior, buy the shovel, survive-without any guilt.
